Pretty Polly started in 1919 when two businessmen decided to use their expertise to make the best ladies stockings possible. They built a manufacturing plant in Nottinghamshire, an historic seat of fabrics and garment making. After 8 years of making various fabrics, they decided to purchase a smaller hosiery company that had expertise in making gorgeous stockings on a small scale. The result was a merger that gave birth to a new company, Pretty Polly.
The company continued making leg wear for many years, slowly becoming one of the biggest names for stockings in the UK. In the 1950s, Pretty Polly was the second largest manufacturer of hosiery in Britain and it was purchased by the Walton Hosiery Group. It's official name changed to Pretty Polly Holdings Ltd. Towards the end of the decade, Pretty Polly made an incredible jump forward in technology and design. They released the very first run-resist non-seamed stockings.
This was the kind of innovation that made hosiery an item of convenience and durability rather than an item of luxury and fragility.
Pretty Polly Today
Pretty Polly has since become part of the Courtalds Group. An international business that makes leg wear of all kinds for all markets. It has benefited from designers from other nations and companies and has been introduced to various new technologies, which it has, of course, used too make its leg wear better.
As of 2013, Pretty Polly claims to manufacture 90% or more of its items in Britain at its Belper manufacturing plant, a location in Derbyshire it has owned since 2005 and its headquarters.
In recent years, Pretty Polly has moved into the limelight more and more with partnerships and team events with celebrities and singers. In the early 2010s, they partnered with Jessie J and provided hosiery for all of her tour dates and for her music videos. In 2014, it announced that it would be partnering with the veteran singer and entertainer Sophie Ellis Bexter. This was one of the biggest new deals that Pretty Polly has been a part of. They will be designing new fashion items based on their work with Ms Bexter and they are providing her with costume items for your new album's music videos, her arena tours and for television appearances and interviews.
